How to Choose an ABA Provider: 10 Questions Every Parent Should Ask
Not all ABA providers are the same. Before you sign anything, ask these 10 questions to make sure you are choosing a program that will actually work for your child.
Choosing an ABA therapy provider is one of the most important decisions you will make for your child. The right provider can make a real difference. The wrong one can waste months and leave you starting over.
Asking the right questions upfront makes it easy to tell the difference. Here are ten questions every parent should ask before choosing a provider.
1. Who supervises my child's therapy?
Every ABA program should be supervised by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). Ask how often the BCBA will directly observe sessions, review progress data, and update the plan. A supervisor who rarely shows up is a red flag.
A strong answer: Our supervisors conduct direct observation at least twice per month and review data weekly.
2. What are the qualifications of the person who will work with my child day-to-day?
Most direct therapy is delivered by trained therapists called Registered Behavior Technicians. Ask about their training, their experience, and how they are matched to individual children. Also ask about staff turnover. High turnover disrupts progress.
3. How will you assess my child before starting?
A proper assessment should include direct observation of your child, conversations with you and other caregivers, standardized tools, and a review of existing evaluations. An assessment that takes less than a few hours is a concern.
4. How will goals be set, and who is involved?
Goals should be set with you, not handed to you. You should understand every goal, why it matters, and how it connects to your child's daily life. Goals written in clinical language that parents cannot understand are not parent-centered.
5. How do you measure progress?
Ask to see an example of how they track progress. ABA is a data-driven field. You should receive regular progress reports and be able to see whether your child is moving forward on each goal.
6. How long until we can start?
Waitlists are common. Ask for a realistic timeline from first contact to the start of therapy. Some providers have waitlists measured in months. Others, like Hannah's Gift, can typically get families started within three weeks.
7. What does a typical week look like?
Ask how many therapy hours are recommended, how sessions are structured, and what happens if a therapist calls in sick. Is there a backup plan?
8. How do you involve parents?
Parent training should not be optional. Ask how often you will meet with the supervising clinician, what training looks like, and what strategies you will learn to use at home between sessions.
9. How will you communicate with me?
Ask how quickly the team responds to parent questions. Do you have a direct way to reach your child's supervisor? Will you receive written progress reports?
10. What happens when my child meets their goals?
Good providers plan for success. Ask how they handle it when a skill is mastered and what stepping down or eventually graduating from therapy looks like. A provider without a clear plan for building independence is worth questioning.
Trust Your Gut
Beyond the answers to these questions, notice how the provider makes you feel. Do they listen? Do they explain things clearly without talking down to you? Do they seem genuinely curious about your child as an individual?
Parent instinct is valid. If something feels off, keep looking.
