New Definition Proposed For ‘Profound Autism’

A proposal published in Molecular Autism this summer seeks to establish a consensus definition of 'profound autism,' covering individuals aged 8 and older with an autism diagnosis, adaptive functioning well below age level, and either severe cognitive impairment (IQ below 50) or limited verbal communication. More than 70 researchers, caregivers, and clinicians reviewed the criteria, with 76% voting in favor. A 2023 CDC study estimated that 26.7% of children on the autism spectrum meet the threshold for profound autism.

What this means for clinicians: A standardized definition of profound autism could lead to more consistent research and clearer guidance on supports and services for this population.
